Their paths first crossed at a simple masquerade ball, only for the more wealthy of course. He had on a simple black mask obscuring half his face, she had a red and black ornate mask, daintily holding it between her fingers as she smiled at those she passed. She had put two fingers on his wrist as they chatted over drinks and the night had ended with her trapped between the wall and his embrace, his lips soft and gentle on hers.

They never exchanged names.

Siwon had heard of her of course. Their fathers had been at war for years, struggling over the small share that was theirs in the business of energy provision. Raised to believe that the other company was the enemy, he had only heard stories of the girl with the iron will who would bring him down if he was not careful. Sooyoung never really had a childhood. The eldest, she was brought up and given an education worthy not of a girl, but an heir. She didn’t play with dolls, she simulated business meetings. She didn’t play house, she managed her employees. She had grown up to be quite a force to be reckoned with.

They had eyed each other from across board rooms and functions halls, Sooyoung with a haughty look and a lifted chin, Siwon with a frown and crease on his forehead, but had never actually spoken, as far as they knew. They were finally introduced at a function, with their fathers occupied elsewhere and they were expected to behave for company. Introductions were formal and polite enough, but then company was called away and the two young adults were left to their own devices. Each nursing a small flute of champagne, they eyed each other appreciatively.

Rivals they may be, but blind to attractiveness they were not.

A waiter had bumped Sooyoung and she had tripped in her mile high heels. Siwon had caught her before too much damage was done and in the process, had her back pressed up against his front. He knew he recognised that perfume.

‘Masquerade ball. You had on a black and red mask,’ Siwon started before Sooyoung whirled around and clamped a hand over his mouth

‘Hush now, Father doesn’t know I was there. I am not supposed to be frivolous,’ the expression on her face made Siwon believe that if she wasn’t in public, Sooyoung would have snorted at the comment. ‘How did you know I was there?’

Siwon covered half of his face and she frowned and tilted her head, before gasping in recognition. Siwon caught her wrist and led her out of the room discreetly, before pinning her against the wall again in a repeat of what had happened a year ago. He lifted a finger and stroked down her cheek gently as she held onto his forearms.

‘What are we doing?’ She whispered, a hint of fear and desire in her eyes.

‘I don’t know,’ Siwon answered truthfully. ‘But if you can tell me that you didn’t think about me at all after that kiss, I will leave you here right now and we can go back to the way things were.’

Sooyoung simply raised herself to her full height and kissed him, winding her arms around his neck as he did the same around the small of her back. She felt like her whole body was on fire just by being near him, this mysterious man, both lover and enemy and he pulled her closer to him, settling her firmly against his body as he kissed her deeper and longingly. She had to pull back, gasping for air first as he skimmed his lips over her jaw and down to her neck and shoulders.

‘You know, if we join forces, nobody would be able to stand against us,’ Sooyoung struggled to speak as Siwon reached her collarbone.

He muffled his laughter against her skin. ‘Here’s to us then, the new power couple,’ Siwon pulled back and raised her hands to his lips, sealing it with a kiss.

Heechul took the file from the table and smacked it down on Leeteuk’s head.

Jungsu lifted his arms to shield himself before rubbing his head as he pouted. ‘It’s evidence, it’s possible.’

‘It’s circumstantial,’ Heechul grounded out. ‘We need more proof.’ Heechul grabbed the scruff of Jungsu’s shirt and dragged him out of their interrogation room, into the car where he sped off like a maniac.

‘Where are we going?’ Jungsu finally found his tongue, his fingernails digging deep into his palms as Heechul skidded round a tight corner.

The car skidded to a stop outside a small apartment building. Heechul thought for awhile before reversing further back to an inconspicuous corner. Putting on shades and slouching down low in his seat, he tossed another pair to his partner. ‘We are on a stakeout,’ he announced happily.

Jungsu raised an eyebrow. ‘But all our reports say that he is a high school teacher and high school is in session right about now.’

‘Well now.’ Before Jungsu knew it, he was being straddled by Heechul and his partner’s face was just a breath away from his. ‘How should we pass the time?’

Jungsu smirked. He had a very good idea how they could waste three hours away. And judging the clever hands pulling his shirt out of his pants and slipping under the hem, Heechul had the same idea.

God he loved stakeouts.

Kyuhyun comes in every day, sits at the same small table in the corner from 2 to 5 every afternoon and remains hunched in the same position for those three hours, tapping away at his computer, only looking up occasionally to sip at his mug of coffee.

Black coffee, Sungmin wrinkled his nose as he poured hot water into the mug. It was so bitter he didn’t know how anybody could stand the taste of it. He set the mug next to the lanky boy, noting the small name sticker on the back of his laptop as always, which was how he knew his name. Sungmin put on his best grin, but a grunt of thanks was all he got, as always.

Sungmin got back behind his counter, leaning against the wooden counter and tapping his finger against his chin as he thought about what he should make for himself during his break.

‘You should make a caramel macchiato with an extra shot of vanilla.’ The voice jolted Sungmin and he nearly smashed his face into the cupboard but a pair of arms wrapped themselves around his waist and pulled him back upright.

‘You know, cause you’re so sweet all the time. You look like you’d like a sweet drink.’ Kyuhyun placed an awkward arm on the back of his neck as he smiled at Sungmin.

He was right. Sungmin preferred the sweeter coffees, Kyuhyun just wanted his black. Sungmin was bouncy and bubbly all the time while Kyuhyun snapped at any one who distracted him from his computer programming. But Sungmin taught Kyuhyun how to be friendlier to people, all while feeding him forkfuls of tiramisu cake from across the table.

Soon caramel macchiato was all Kyuhyun drank anymore, but only if Sungmin made it of course.

‘What are you?’ You whispered, every nerve in your body screaming at you to run away.

You reached out to touch him, but his skin was warm to the touch. No fangs, he looked like an ordinary man.

He bared his teeth in a charming smile. ‘I told you,I’m a vampire.’

He drew himself up to his full height, towering over you and you shrank back.

‘We are the reason your ancestors were terrified of the shadows. You know that human instinct that tells you to be afraid of the dark?’

Sungmin gripped your wrist tightly, a glint coming into his eyes, ‘That’s us. We are legion, and you poor humans don’t even know.’

The girl cowered before them, afraid of the gleam that she saw in their eyes. She had thought the two gorgeous men were looking for a good time. It turns out that they were, just not he kind of fun that she had in mind.

‘Would you want to start? Or should I?’ Donghae gestured towards the girl lazily.

‘You got first blood yesterday,’ Eunhyuk complained. ‘It’s my turn.’

Before Donghae could retort, Eunhyuk had swooped down and latched onto the girl’s neck. She was young, clean, her blood tasted delicious and Eunhyuk moaned from the taste. Donghae had stepped forward, a hand on her mouth to muffle her scream. His eyes slowly glazing over as he watched Eunhyuk lap up the drops of blood, he eventually gave up and shoved the other man aside abruptly to have his turn.

When they were done, Eunhyuk drew Donghae to him. ‘Satisfied?’

Donghae mumbled out an agreement as he spied a spot of blood of Eunhyuk’s jaw. ‘You missed a spot,’ he said as he leaned in to swirl his tongue around the dried speck. Eunhyuk fiddled with the rose that he had held to entice the girl in, before plucking all the blood red petals and scattering it around the girl’s broken body.

Donghae hummed and took his hand, as the pair walked off into the night, sated for the day.

Kyuhyun laced his fingers with Sungmin’s and pulled him down to sit on the snow. Sungmin grunted and yelped as some snow got into his pants and he swatted at the younger before throwing some snow in his face. A mini snow fight ensued, which only ended after Sungmin grabbed the collar of Kyuhyun’s winter coat, pulling him close and kissing him.

‘I wouldn’t have chosen to spend this Christmas any other way, just fyi,’ Sungmin murmured.

Kyuhyun rested his head in Sungmin’s lap and opened his mouth but Sungmin slapped his hand over his mouth. ‘Don’t you dare say Starcraft,’ he growled.

Kyuhyun nipped at Sungmin’s palm gently. ‘You’re mean.’

A moment of silence fell as Sungmin stroked his hair slowly. Kyuhyun opened his eyes and put his hand on Sungmin’s cheek. ‘I was going to say I felt the same way by the way.’

‘Merry Christmas Kyu,’ Sungmin smiled.

Kyuhyun stuck his tongue out at the older, ‘Merry Christmas Sungmin hyung.

Yoona sat on the floor, leaning on the couch, hugging her knees as she watched the fire crackle in the little fireplace. She sighed as she cocked her head to the side. She was hoping that she wouldn’t have to spend Christmas alone this year but Kyuhyun’s flight had gotten stuck when a huge snowstorm hit Tokyo.

Santa, she closed her eyes and thought, if it’s not too much to ask, all I want is Kyuhyun back for Christmas. Before she knew it, she had drifted off to sleep to the soft crackling of wood.

Yoona woke to warm arms encircling her waist. ‘Hey you,’ Kyuhyun murmured in her ear.

‘How’d you get home so soon? I thought you were stuck,’ she hugged him around the neck tight.

‘I bribed and squeezed into a cargo plane that was going to brave the weather,’ Kyuhyun buried his face in Yoona’s hair. ‘It was worth it. Merry Christmas.’

‘Merry Christmas,’ Yoona grinned. ‘Best part is, I found out Santa’s real, and you’re home.’ She leaned into him and they watched the fireplace crackle, counting down the minutes to Christmas.

Sungmin rose up from the waters, gently inclining his head at all the fishes and other creatures who reverently parted ways for him as they paid homage to him, god of the sea. He held his hand out to a close crab, smiling as the crab scuttled over and gurgled bubbles at him.

Out of the corner of his eye, he saw him walk out of the forest, feet bare, autumn red and orange leaves rustling around the hem of his pants. Sungmin always watched him from below the waters and his hair changed colour as the seasons changed, his current hair was as red as the leaves swirling at his feet. Sungmin smiled.

‘Hello,’ Ryeowook stopped in front of the sea god, a smile lighting up his face

‘Hello,’ Sungmin beamed. He reached a hand out tentatively, before resting it on Ryeowook’s cheek. ‘I missed you.’

The younger hummed contentedly and stepped closer, wrapping his arms tightly around Sungmin’s waist. ‘It’s been a long year, I’ve missed you too.
